Research

Motor Neuron Disease (MND) such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal disease, which generally causes severe physical disability involving all limbs, speech, swallowing, and breathing. The intellect is usually spared. Its management demands enormous, sustained efforts and multidimensional approaches by patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals.

We have proved how the diagnosis is confirmed, and what we can do to ensure optimum medical and emotionally supportive care for our patients as well as families and caregivers, and have taken a leading part in developing the community healthcare systems for MND, collaborating with medical associations, healthcare centers, government offices, medical centers, social welfare institutions, and the university faculty members.

The public Caregiving insurance system was established in 2000, which has made a big change of healthcare, medical, and social welfare systems in Japan. The community healthcare systems for MND, which we have developed, need to be reconsidered. We are going to make suggestions for ways professionals can assist people with MND and their significant others.
